Maryland’s Department of Aging has a program called DME (Durable Medical Equipment) which provides free durable medical equipment to Marylanders with any illness, injury, or disability, regardless of age, and at no cost. All equipment is collected via donation and is sanitized, repaired, and redistributed to Marylanders in need.
What equipment is available through DME?
Basic DME – canes, crutches, walkers, rollators, shower chairs/tub transfer benches, bedside commodes and toilet safety rails, and bedrails.
Complex DME – wheelchairs (manual, transport, and power), power scooters, home hospital beds, and mechanical lifts.
How do you request DME?
Requests can be made by filling out either a basic DME application form, and/or a complex DME application form depending on the equipment needed. After the application is received and processed, DME staff will contact the requester to notify them if the requested equipment is in stock and schedule a pick-up appointment.
Is a prescription or insurance required for DME equipment?
It is not required. However, if complex DME equipment is being requested, Part C of the application must be completed by a healthcare professional treating the beneficiary.
How long can the beneficiary keep the equipment?
Equipment provided to a beneficiary is theirs to keep. Once the equipment is no longer needed, it is encouraged that the beneficiary donate back to the program so they can help another Maryland resident in need.
Does the program deliver equipment directly to the beneficiary?
No. The equipment must be picked up by appointment at one of the several pick up sites around the state.
Who do you contact to get started?
To contact to someone directly at DME call 240.230.8000 or email DME.MDOA@maryland.gov.
